What is the Martin Ennals Award?

The Martin Ennals Award is a annual prize for human rights defenders. Finalists and the laureate are selected by a Jury of 10 of the world's leading human rights NGOs. The Award provides protection and support to human rights defenders who are at risk.

 

The jury

The Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders (MEA) is a unique collaboration among ten of the world’s leading human rights organizations to give protection to human rights defenders worldwide.

  • Zone 9 Bloggers

Ethiopia

Zone 9 is a collective of nine independent Amharic language bloggers who aim “to create independent narratives” in the east African country of Ethiopia. Their moto is “We blog because we care”.

  • Razan Zaitouneh

Syria

Razan Zaitouneh is a prominent human rights lawyer, activist, and journalist in Syria. Razan has dedicated her life to defending political prisoners, documenting crimes against humanity, and helping others free themselves from oppression and starvation.

  • Ilham Tohti

China

lham Tohti is a renowned Uyghur public intellectual in the People’s Republic of China. For over two decades he has worked tirelessly to foster dialogue and understanding between Uyghurs and Han Chinese, despite an environment of religious, cultural, and political repression suffered by Uyghurs.

 

The ceremony will take place in Geneva at Uni Dufour, Auditorium U-600, at 6pm on 11 October 2016. Entry is free, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want to assist to the ceremony, you can register clicking here.
